Dinah Applewhite, MD, is a primary care physician with clinical, research and policy interests in improving the wellbeing of people who use drugs. Her desire to fight stigma and advocate for social change has been the driving force in her training and career. She entered medical school with volunteer and work experience in the fields of reproductive justice, LGBTQ health, and HIV/AIDS prevention. During her medical training, she became increasingly drawn to care for people who use drugs, gaining clinical, advocacy and research experience in drug use and harm reduction.
She has been with Boston Health Care for the Homeless since 2020 when she came to work on the Community Care in Reach Program during her addiction medicine fellowship. She now works at both BHCHP and Massachusetts General Hospital, providing primary care and addiction medicine in low threshold settings. She is an Instructor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and is the Director of Harm Reduction for the Massachusetts General Hospital Substance Use Disorder Initiative. She is involved in local, state and national advocacy efforts regarding supervised consumption spaces and the criminalization of people who use drugs.
