Monthly Giving: Hope & Dignity Society
How do we meet the constant needs and unexpected crises that come BHCHP’s way almost every month? We are fortunate to have a group of loyal contributors who make monthly gifts that carry BHCHP and our patients through not only the needs we can predict, but the unforeseen circumstances that we can’t.
This steady support from the Hope & Dignity Society is crucial—keeping us ready throughout the year to fulfill the always enduring and often unpredictable issues that arise.
A few good reasons to consider joining:
- The satisfaction of knowing you are addressing both ongoing and unexpected needs every month.
- An easy, convenient, and affordable way for you to make an even more significant contribution.
- The ease in adjusting your gift at any time (increase, decrease or suspend) by simply logging in to your personal account.
- Documentation of your gift will appear each month on your credit card statement.
- An annual tax receipt will be sent each January, consolidating your gifts from the prior year.

Planned Giving: Dennis Buff Bequest Society
In November 2009, BHCHP received a poignant and unexpected bequest from Dennis Buff, a long-time and well-known patient who had died a few months earlier. Dennis is the first patient to leave a bequest to BHCHP and his remarkable story has been the inspiration for the Dennis Buff Bequest Society.
You, too, can leave an enduring legacy by supporting BHCHP’s work through a charitable bequest gift: a distribution in any amount from your estate to a charitable organization through your last will and testament.
To learn more about bequests and including BHCHP in your plans, please contact Linda O’Connor, Chief Development Officer, at loconnor@bhchp.org or 857-654-1050.
And to learn about Dennis Buff, read on:
BHCHP cared for Dennis for years: in his cardboard box under a loading dock at the Wise Potato Chip factory in South Boston; in the hospital; in Barbara McInnis House, our medical respite program; and finally in housing. Dennis struggled with his mental health and with alcohol use. He suffered the usual ravages of the street: frostbite, fractures, and a very deep sense of hopelessness.
He had, like many other homeless patients, called us his “family” and listed us as next-of-kin in all of his diverse medical records and housing applications. With the constant support of his medical team and the staff at the Barbara McInnis House, one of these applications finally succeeded, and Dennis moved into his own apartment in the summer of 2008.
On August 4, 2009, at much too young an age, Dennis passed away. Nearly four months later, we unexpectedly received a moving gift from Dennis: a bequest of several thousand dollars.
Dennis is the first patient to ever leave a bequest to BHCHP, inspiring the board of directors to create the Dennis Buff Bequest Society in honor of him and the impact and messages of his gift: that we are, in the fullest sense, family for many of the patients we serve; and that one does not have to be wealthy to make a bequest of enduring importance.

Donor-Advised Funds
As a qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit, BHCHP is grateful to be considered for contributions through donor-advised funds. This is a convenient and effective way to support our patients and our work.
A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is a philanthropic vehicle established at a public charity. It allows donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit and then recommend grants from the fund over time. One way to think about a DAF is like a charitable savings account: a donor contributes to the fund as frequently as they like and then recommends grants to their favorite charity when they are ready.
For more information about BHCHP and your DAF, please contact Linda O’Connor, Chief Development Officer, at loconnor@bhchp.org or 857-654-1050.
Below, you can also watch a video about one of our donors who gives through a DAF and find a variety of companies and organizations that administer DAFs.

In-Kind Donation Drives
Please note, that due to space constraints, COVID-19, and long-standing relationships with organizations that provide our patients clothing directly, we are not able to take any donations of clothing and can only accept new in-kind donations. Thank you!
Our patients face the unjust challenges of life in shelters, on the streets, and in temporary housing, while struggling to maintain their health. Among these challenges is acquiring basic necessities. We welcome the help of faith-based groups, schools, colleges and individuals to organize donation drives to help meet the need for these seemingly small, practical items.
Items gathered in these drives can have a tremendous impact. Distributed by our doctors, nurses, and case managers, they not only improve the quality of care we deliver, but also help us develop and maintain the trusting relationships that are such an essential part of our work.
Thank you for your interest in hosting a donation drive to support our patients. If you are an individual or community group, please contact Alyssa Brassil at abrassil@bhchp.org to discuss your drive plans. If you are with a company and hoping to host a drive at your place of employment, please contact Edith Gregory at egregory@bhchp.org. We ask that you please reach out to Alyssa or Edith prior to starting your drive.
Foundations and Corporations
Financial contributions are the most direct way to make a positive impact. Cash donations and grants of any size go a long way to further BHCHP’s work caring for more than 10,000 individuals and families every year.
While unrestricted giving allows us the most flexibility to meet the needs of our patients, we have several giving priorities in need of funding which include services for families experiencing homelessness, addiction treatment services, dental clinic support, behavioral health services case management services, and patient supplies. We will work with you to find the best fit for your giving needs and will provide you with updates about how your contribution makes a positive difference in the lives of our patients and families.
You may make a contribution online here, or contact Colleen Eagan, Director of Corporate & Foundation Relations, at ceagan@bhchp.org or 857-654-1047 for more information.
