Boston Marathon 2020: Meet Haylie Butler of Team BHCHP
Originally from Seal Beach, CA and a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, Haylie Butler is a second year AmeriCorps member at BHCHP. Haylie has been part of the Family Team working primarily at a family shelter in Dorchester and a youth shelter in Harvard Square as the bilingual Child Development Care Coordinator. Haylie is excited to join the BHCHP 2020 marathon team and sees this as an opportunity to contribute to the organization that has impacted her own path and passion to pursue a career in medicine. The importance of advocacy, quality care and social justice in health care that Haylie’s team and patients have taught her inspire her to run for BHCHP. Haylie grew up as a competitive figure skater and played varsity volleyball in college. While studying abroad in Argentina, Haylie started running to stay active and ran her first half marathon in Buenos Aires in 2015! Ever since Haylie has been running, she has wanted to run the Boston Marathon. The chance to join a team that supports a community Haylie is dedicated to through her work and a place she calls home is giving Haylie the opportunity to fulfill a dream while running and fundraising. Haylie’s training is with a purpose, to serve and give back to the women, children and youth she serves in the shelters in Boston and Cambridge. Haylie has found her work with the youth at the shelter in Harvard Square to be rewarding and challenging. Haylie enjoys engaging in meaningful ways with the youth and working to address their specific needs, which are different and unique compared to other Family Team sites. In addition to Haylie’s work at BHCHP and training for the marathon, Haylie enjoys figure skating, playing volleyball, cooking, travelling and speaking Spanish. Haylie is excited to be starting medical school at Harvard Medical School in August and will continue to live in Boston, so she can continue her involvement with BHCHP. Haylie’s Family Team members, family, friends and AmeriCorps crew will be supporting her on Marathon Day and BHCHP invites you to support Haylie’s fundraising efforts and join in along the 26.2 mile route!
