Mental Illness: A pervasive problem among our adult patients
The correlation between mental health and homelessness has been well documented, but the challenges to addressing the need are complex.
In 1994 BHCHP formed a special team to better respond. Today, this highly accomplished team includes psychiatrists, a clinical nurse specialist, psychologists, clinical social workers and licensed mental health counselors.
Comprehensive Core Services
The professional team at BHCHP delivers a full spectrum of mental and behavioral health services including:
- Individual and group counseling
- Child and family therapy
- Medication management
- Referrals to detoxification and rehabilitation programs
- Substance use disorders services
The Behavioral Health Team works with patients at our clinics, our medical respite facility and at family shelters throughout the community. The team also provides training to mental health professionals, including year-long clinical placements for students of mental health counseling as well as fourth-year psychiatry residents.
Recognizing that behavioral health care is an essential element of quality primary care, BHCHP works hard to fully integrate these services. Behavioral health clinicians work alongside primary care providers, not only easing access to services for patients, but also promoting collaboration and case conferencing among these professionals. While our efforts cover a spectrum of needs, clinicians specifically work together to address opioid addiction and to provide follow-up care for patients who screen positively for depression.
As our patients’ needs become increasingly complex, BHCHP will continue to innovate and adapt to meet them.
