BHCHP has offered HIV services to homeless patients since 1986. Today, our HIV Team provides
comprehensive primary care to more than 200 patients, and offers case management and client advocacy services to dozens more.
This dedicated team is led by a physician assistant and includes physicians, nurses, mental health
professionals and case managers. A number of team members are bilingual in Spanish or Haitian Creole.
Managing HIV while coping with the chaos of homelessness is an almost unimaginable burden.
To help, the HIV Team supplements their medical services with lots of social support and advocacy.
They help patients resolve problems that are exacerbated by homelessness, like finding ways to comply
with complex medication schedules.
A key program goal is to identify homeless people with HIV who are unaware of their infection and to get them into treatment.
To do this, the Team works within homeless shelters, where they provide HIV counseling and testing as well as groups on HIV
prevention.
