Robert Taube, PhD, MPH Executive Director Robert Taube joined BHCHP in 1993 and has served as executive director since 1998. Dr. Taube is responsible for the overall administration of the organization. Trained in community psychology, Dr. Taube began his career as a clinician and a manager of mental health services at the Neponset Health Center in Dorchester. As the executive director of the Columbia Point Health Center in Dorchester, Dr. Taube led the organization back from financial receivership in 1984 to financial stability and a new facility in 1990. The center is now called the Geiger-Gibson Community Health Center. Dr. Taube completed a mid-career master's degree in public health from Harvard University with a concentration in health care finance and policy. He also has a doctorate in counseling/clinical psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. Jim O'Connell, MD President and Street Physician Dr. O'Connell helped found BHCHP in 1985, after completing his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. O'Connell assists BHCHP's Board of Directors in setting the strategic direction for the program. He also advocates for public policies and programs to address the needs of homeless people. Dr. O'Connell juggles his active role as president with the demands of a busy clinical practice, spending much of his time caring for Boston's homeless population on the street and in one of the program's hospital-based clinics. Nationally recognized as one of the preeminent experts on homelessness and healthcare, Dr. O'Connell lectures extensively and publishes widely. He is the editor of the Manual of Communicable Diseases in Shelters - one of the most widely used texts on homeless healthcare. Dr. O'Connell earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School and a master's degree in philosophy and theology from Cambridge University in England. He graduated Maxima Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame. Monica Bharel, MD Medical Director Dr. Bharel serves as the chief medical officer of the program, supervising the medical practice of BHCHP's physicians, nurse practitioners and physicians assistants. Dr. Bharel, who joined BHCHP in 2003, has many years of experience in caring for vulnerable populations in both outpatient and inpatient settings. She most recently served as the medical director for the Barbara McInnis House from 2003-2008. Dr. Bharel received her medical training at Boston Unversity School of Medicine in 1994 and completed her internal medicine residency and chief residency at Boston City Hospital/Boston Medical Center. Barry Bock, RN Director of Clinical Operations Mr. Bock supervises nursing practice across the organization, as well as the day-to-day operations of the various clinic sites. Together with the medical director, he assures that sites and teams function smoothly and provide responsive care to patients. Mr. Bock has worked in homeless health care since 1979. In 1986 he was one of three nurses to develop the Morning Nurses' Clinic at Pine Street Inn in Boston. He then served as clinic administrator until 1990, when he came to Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. When the Barbara McInnis House was established in 1993, Mr. Bock served as the director, overseeing all aspects of the respite program. He has published and lectured on respite care and on HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases in shelters. Agnes Leung, MHA Chief Financial Officer Ms. Leung is responsible for planning, monitoring and reporting on the financial operations of the organization. She is also closely involved in long-term strategic program and financial planning. Prior to receiving her Master of Health Care Administration and working in finance, Ms. Leung was a special education teacher in Hong Kong. She also holds degrees from York University, Toronto and the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Ms. Leung joined Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program in 1995. Cheryl Kane, M.Ed, RN Director of Development and Street Nurse Ms. Kane guides the Development Department's efforts to supplement federal and state funding with philanthropic streams of revenue. She has helped BHCHP acquire a diverse portfolio of giving and has significantly grown revenue for program support. Ms. Kane also plays a pivotal role in generating momentum for BHCHP's capital campaign. With a master's in education, Ms. Kane worked as an educator with underserved children and homeless adults for nearly 20 years. During this time she also participated in the spiritual formation of young adults, leading seminars and retreats. In 1997, after obtaining her nursing degree, Ms. Kane joined BHCHP. Over the years, she has worked as a nurse at various program sites and currently maintains a busy clinical practice as a street team nurse. |
